NEAT community garden registrations open

The Northern Environmental Action Team (NEAT) says garden preparations will begin on May 22nd. Gardener’s with a plot last year will have first dibs on their beds, and the remaining beds will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. NEAT took over the project that the North Peace Justice Society previously ran for several years. Karen Mason-Bennett says the organization didn’t have enough staff to continue managing the garden, so NEAT stepped in. “Last year, we were lucky enough to get a grant through the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. That provided us with a full-time staff member, and then we had two additional support persons that we’re able to give us a hand throughout the summer.”

Province highlights NEAT during Community Social Services Awareness Month

NEAT food security program. (NEAT) FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. –  The British Columbia Government proclaims March as Community Social Services Awareness Month in appreciation of the more than 42,000 people who work in the community social services sector, including the Northern Environmental Action Team. NEAT was founded 30 years ago to help Fort St. John residents develop a plan to keep more household waste out of the landfill. Since 2017, the regional district has handled solid waste management, allowing NEAT to turn its attention to other community projects, including those surrounding food security. Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction Nicholas Simons says access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food is a key priority for the government.

Resident speaks out on SPCA dog case

Dog being groomed. (BC SPCA) FORT NELSON, B.C. – A Fort Nelson resident who claims to have called in the tip about the dogs taken by the SPCA says there’s more to the story than the organization has released. In a post on Facebook Tuesday, Mandy Rowsell says she was making her monthly gas meter rounds last week when she noticed no tracks were going in or out of a residence since her previous visit the month before. When she approached the door, she says the sound of what she thought was three or four dogs came from behind the door.
