DEAN, JULIE SHAW and VINNY VELLA, The Philadelphia Inquirer PHILADELPHIA (AP) Amid growing calls for police reform and national debate over the deadly use of force, police departments in Philadelphia and beyond are struggling to retain and attract officers, law enforcement officials say. Across the region and the nation, police officials and union leaders described the state of recruiting as in “crisis” mode.

PEORIA – The Scottish Rite Cathedral is nearly ready for its second act.  KDB Group, which purchased the historic Peoria building in 2019, is putting the finishing touches on its extensive $5 million restoration of the city’s newest performing arts venue. Numerous local performance groups have expressed interest in using the historic building, said Jenny Parkhurst, performing arts director for KDB Group, who hopes to attract everything from traveling road shows to local community fundraising events and weddings into the venue.  “Our grand opening will be announced in the near future, and we will have a kind of community welcome into the building,” said Parkhurst. “We will invite the public to come in and take a tour, and at that time will announce our programing for the year.”

PEORIA Kim Blickenstaff never has forgotten what construction of Interstate 74 did, in his opinion, to downtown Peoria and the North Valley. Now, the local developer believes he has a remedy that incorporates the interstate. Or the open space above it, more accurately. Blickenstaff envisions construction of platforms between vehicular overpasses that span much of the owntown segment of I-74 west of the Murray Baker Bridge. The stretch between Knoxville Avenue and the Illinois River lies below ground level. Atop those platforms above I-74 between Adams Street and Perry Avenue would be a public park. Green spaces and plazas could house outdoor concerts, fountains, trees, walking paths, food trucks and other things, according to Blickenstaff.

The funds are from the gaming dollars from Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course in East Hanover Township and available through the casino local share revenue program. The Dauphin County Gaming Advisory Board presented recommendations to the commissioners for recipients of funding. Those recommendations were made following application and hearing processes.
