Athens-Clarke police hunt suspect in shooting of man walking along road
Athens-Clarke police are searching for a suspect and a motive in an apparent drive-by shooting Thursday that wounded an Athens man.
The shooting occurred about 3:30 p.m. along the 2400 block of Danielsville Road, police Lt. Shaun Barnett said.
The victim, who was shot at least twice, told police he was walking along the road when a car he could describe only as a gray sedan stopped and a person inside began shooting at him.
Police have no suspects and no evidence the victim provoked the shooting.
The victim, a 24-year-old Athens man, is expected to survive his wounds.

Athens-Clarke police have joined with a company to produce a Community Crime Map the public can access to see where crimes occur.
The department is working with LexisNexis Risk Solutions on the map, which shows the dates, locations and types of crimes.
“It’s a matter of transparency,” police Lt. Shaun Barnett said Friday. “Oftentimes, people are looking to move into a certain area of town so they want to see what the crimes are in the area so this is an easy way for people to get that information.”
In addition, people can sign up on the site for email crime alerts. The map provides basic information, but doesn’t give a specific address or details of the crime, Barnett said.
Cameras catching many drivers speeding through Athens-Clarke school zones
More than 1,000 motorists could have been surprised recently with costly speeding tickets for school zone violations had Athens-Clarke police been issuing citations instead of warnings last month.
School zone monitoring cameras have been installed at three elementary schools, and police began a 30-day warning period March 22 that ends April 26, at which time citations will be issued.
During the first week March 22-26 more than 1,200 violations were caught on camera, and 1,008 of those violators were mailed a warning, according to police Lt. Shaun Barnett.
“One week and we don’t even have the numbers for this week yet,” Barnett said Friday about the high number of violations.
