Athens-Clarke police served notice Friday that beginning Monday, they will issue citations instead of warnings for speeding in three school zones monitored by cameras.
During a month-long warning period, police said more than 2,400 warnings were sent to the registered owners of vehicles that violated the speed limit in the school zones.
The cameras photograph offending vehicles in zones at Barnett Shoals Elementary, J.J. Harris Elementary and Whitehead Road Elementary schools.
Starting Monday, drivers caught speeding by the Athens-Clarke County Police Departmentâs school speed zone cameras will be sent citations, as the warning period for these cameras comes to an end.
The cameras were initially set up in late March, and over 2,400 warnings were issued to the owners of violating vehicles during the 30-day warning period, according to a Friday press release.
Violations are only captured if a vehicle is going at least 11 miles per hour over the speed limit, according to an April 2 press release. The cameras are installed near Barnett Shoals Elementary, J.J. Harris Elementary and Whitehead Elementary.
Cameras catching many drivers speeding through Athens-Clarke school zones
More than 1,000 motorists could have been surprised recently with costly speeding tickets for school zone violations had Athens-Clarke police been issuing citations instead of warnings last month.
School zone monitoring cameras have been installed at three elementary schools, and police began a 30-day warning period March 22 that ends April 26, at which time citations will be issued.
During the first week March 22-26 more than 1,200 violations were caught on camera, and 1,008 of those violators were mailed a warning, according to police Lt. Shaun Barnett.
“One week and we don’t even have the numbers for this week yet,” Barnett said Friday about the high number of violations.
