An Athens teen was jailed early Sunday after police said he gunned down a man during a dispute at a housing complex.
Marquise Malcom, 15, was charged by Athens-Clarke police as an adult with felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a person under 18 and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
The shooting occurred shortly after 11 p.m. during a large gathering at Clarke Garden Apartments on Carriage Lane, a complex off Barnett Shoals Road, according to police.
The victim was identified as Carlos Harper, 38. He and the suspect both lived in the complex, police said.
Cameras catching many drivers speeding through Athens-Clarke school zones
More than 1,000 motorists could have been surprised recently with costly speeding tickets for school zone violations had Athens-Clarke police been issuing citations instead of warnings last month.
School zone monitoring cameras have been installed at three elementary schools, and police began a 30-day warning period March 22 that ends April 26, at which time citations will be issued.
During the first week March 22-26 more than 1,200 violations were caught on camera, and 1,008 of those violators were mailed a warning, according to police Lt. Shaun Barnett.
“One week and we don’t even have the numbers for this week yet,” Barnett said Friday about the high number of violations.
