Local roundup: MVCS girls cruise in state tournament opener Sydney Goodwin Modified: 3/16/2021 10:25:10 PM QUECHEE The third-ranked Mid Vermont Christian School girls basketball team quickly put to rest any upset concerns, opening Tuesday night with an 18-3 run en route to a 69-22 victory over 14th-seeded Richford to open the VPA Division IV playoffs. Sydney Goodwin led the MVCS attack with 26 points, including 12 from the free-throw line. Rachel Horner-Richardson and Hayley Goodwin each had 18 points. The Eagles (8-2) built a 33-12 lead at halftime and scored 20 points in the third quarter to put the game on ice. “We got off to a quick start and were able to take control early. We have typically started slow in past playoff games, so I was happy with our focus and effort tonight,” MVCS coach Chris Goodwin said.

Valley News - Local roundup: Perreault, WRV nearly surprise Proctor

Local roundup: Perreault, WRV nearly surprise Proctor Ella Perreault Modified: 3/12/2021 3:52:36 PM PROCTOR, Vt. If anyone is going to keep the Proctor High girls basketball team from winning the VPA Division IV state title later this month, they’ll have to find a way to shut down the Phantoms’ Maggie McKearin first. White River Valley did just that on Thursday night, although it wasn’t quite enough to avoid a 44-35 defeat. The Wildcats’ Ella Perreault drew the assignment of silencing McKearin, a double-digit scorer on most nights but owner of just six points thanks to the close defensive attention. Unfortunately for the Wildcats (2-4), Proctor is more than a one-player team. Isabel Greb made up for McKearin’s relative silence with 15 points, Hope Kelley added seven and the Phantoms’ defense limited WRV to just 13 second-half points.

Hartford’s Brandon Potter drew the assignment of guarding Fair Haven star Kohlby Murray and Potter was more than up to the task, holding Murray to just 13 points. Potter countered that with 13 points of his own to settle that battle at a draw.

Valley News - Local roundup: Thetford girls grind out a victory over Williamstown

Local roundup: Thetford girls grind out a victory over Williamstown Kelsey Smith Modified: 3/8/2021 10:58:31 PM WILLIAMSTOWN, Vt. The Thetford Academy girls basketball team isn’t afraid of a little hard work. After all, it sometimes comes with victorious benefits. Riding a season-high 15 points from Kelsey Smith, the Panthers muscled their way to a 50-38 win over Williamstown on Monday night. A few days after struggling for a half in a 14-point loss at Windsor, Thetford (4-3) toughed out a victory against a team that rarely yields them willingly. “It was a grind-out game,” TA coach Eric Ward said. “Williamstown made us work. We are just a bit off but know, with a good week of practice, we will be ready for Rivendell on Saturday and the playoffs starting next week.”
