PROCTOR, Vt. If anyone is going to keep the Proctor High girls basketball team from winning the VPA Division IV state title later this month, they’ll have to find a way to shut down the Phantoms’ Maggie McKearin first.
White River Valley did just that on Thursday night, although it wasn’t quite enough to avoid a 44-35 defeat. The Wildcats’ Ella Perreault drew the assignment of silencing McKearin, a double-digit scorer on most nights but owner of just six points thanks to the close defensive attention.
Unfortunately for the Wildcats (2-4), Proctor is more than a one-player team. Isabel Greb made up for McKearin’s relative silence with 15 points, Hope Kelley added seven and the Phantoms’ defense limited WRV to just 13 second-half points.
