K-pop is redefining music marketing in the U.S. Lily Lowndes, Contributing Writer|April 4, 2021 Why do people like K-pop? “All of the work that the artists put in from their trainee days until they debut is something admirable,” answered Jorge Solis, a member of TCN Pulse, a K-pop organization at DePaul. “To see the work they put in for each dance, each song, is something that attracts [fans].” Korean popular music, also known as K-pop, is a music genre that has garnered a growing global fanbase for its emphasis on creating an entertainment experience that goes beyond just music.  “People are attracted to the music, [and] dance performances,” said fellow TCN Pulse member Kylie Mikunas. “Sometimes the meanings of the songs are very important as well and K-pop creates a sense of community.”

The supernatural history-based drama, Joseon Exorcist, was co-produced by YG Studioplex, Crave Works and Lotte Cultureworks. YG Studioplex is a TV production company jointly established by YG Entertainment and Barami Bunda in April 2017, though the entertainment agency owns 99.09 percent of the production firm s shares. What is causing the controversy is that two Chinese firms, Shanghai Fengying Business Consultant Partnership and Tencent Mobility, are the two largest shareholders in YG Entertainment after its founder Yang Hyun-suk, and they could have played an influence in the direction of the drama to favor a Chinese perspective of history.

The acquisition of Ithaca, headed by US record executive Scooter Braun, would be the first major foray into the US market for Big Hit Entertainment. Mr Braun, currently Ithaca’s chief executive, will join the board of HYBE, and Ithaca artists will participate in the capital increase of HYBE to further strengthen the ties between the two companies. The company helped popularise K-pop, adding to the rising global visibility of Korean entertainment such as films like “Parasite,” the winner of the Academy Award for best picture in 2020. BTS’s “Dynamite” topped the Billboard’s Hot 100 in 2020, the first Asian act to be No 1 on the US Music chart since Kyu Sakamoto’s “Sukiyaki” held the No. 1 spot for 3 weeks in 1963.
