On February 7, a glacier broke off in Joshimath in Uttarakhand s Chamoli district which caused a massive flood in the Dhauli Ganga river and endangered lives and disrupted activities of people living along its banks and nearby areas.

On 8 February 2021, Jaiprakash Power Ventures declared a force majeure event leading to the closure of its power generation at the company s 400 MW (mega-watt) Vishnuprayag Hydro Electric Project (HEP) due to river water gushing into the Tail Race Tunnel of the project due to the unfortunate tragedy in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.
Disaster struck Uttarakhand s Chamoli district on 7 February 2021 in the form of an avalanche and deluge, after a portion of the Nanda Devi glacier broke off. The sudden flood triggered large-scale devastation in the high mountain areas.
JPVL resumes operations at Vishnuprayag hydro project

Based in Chamoli, Himachal Pradesh, the plant had been shut down since February 7 after river water gushed into its tailrace tunnel following a glacial outburst that severely damaged the 520MW NTPC Tapovan Vishnugad project and the 13.2MW Rishi Ganga project.
“The company is pleased to announce that after carrying out extensive cleaning of the Tail Race Tunnel of the project and other associated systems and thorough checking of all elements of the project, we have resumed operations,” JPVL said in its statement.

“The residents of Chaien village have been waiting for 13-14 years for rehabilitation,” Sati said.
Recurring loss and constant fear
“We live in constant fear of death due to rocks falling from the mountains and the earth shaking due to the tunneling work for the power project,” 62-year-old Yashoda Devi said.
She said 21 families whose houses had developed cracks due to the tunneling work were rehabilitated in Joshimath, located on the opposite mountain.
“We were assured of rehabilitation in a phased manner, but haven’t heard anything in the past few years,” Yashoda Devi said.
The Vishnuprayag Hydroelectric Project was awarded in 1992 by the then Uttar Pradesh government to Jaiprakash Power Ventures Limited. The run-of-the-river project entailed building a barrage in Lambagad, behind the mountain on which Chaien village is located. The water from the reservoir is diverted through tunnels under village.
