With poll related violence claiming five lives in Cooch Behar district s Sitalkuchi assembly constituency in West Bengal during the fourth phase of polling and political temperature rising, the poll panel has barred – with immediate effect- all political leaders from entering the district for next 72 hours.
Kolkata: What was being feared as a distinct possibility and the portends of which were clearly evident all through campaigning and until three phases of polling in the 2021 assembly elections in West Bengal came through in the most ugly and unfortunate terms possible on Saturday morning as five people lost their lives in electoral violence in the fourth phase of electioneering in the state. A first-time voter was killed in violence while returning home after casting his vote at a polling booth in Cooch Behar district, while four others lost their lives when Central Forces opened fire on an armed mob outside polling booth No 126 at Jor Patki in the Seetalkuchi constituency of the same district later on Saturday morning.

New Delhi: After the first major outbreak of violence during West Bengal assembly elections, in which five persons were killed, including four in alleged firing by CISF personnel, the Election Commission on Saturday (April 10) directed the Union Home Ministry to deploy 71 additional companies of Central Armed Police forces (CAPFs) in West Bengal for the conduct of the remaining four phases of polls.
Senior officials told PTI that the poll panel has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to rush in and deploy the fresh companies immediately. Till now, a total of 1,000 companies were earmarked for the conduct of elections in the state that has 294 assembly seats.

Kolkata: April 10: Violence erupted in the fourth phase of elections in Bengal in which five people were killed in two separate incidents. Four persons were killed when central forces opened fire on an unruly mob in Sitalkuchi assembly constituency in Mathabhanga block in Cooch Behar district on Saturday. In another incident in the same constituency a first-time voter was killed, taking the total number of deaths to five.
Sources in the Election Commission said that a preliminary report that reached the special police observer Vivek Dubey suggests that the central forces had to open fire in self-defence.
