Plaque at Ormsgill Reservoir remembers family of geese run over

The new plaque has been welcomed by the Mayor of Barrow, Cllr Helen Wall. The council’s lead member for heritage and wildlife said: “This family of geese have clearly touched someone’s heart. “I think it shows a great a sensitivity that someone actually wanted to put the plaque there and commemorate these geese. “It is a really nice thing to do. “It would be good to put a sign up there to remind people that geese do cross in that area. “It shows that we are a community that cares about our wildlife.” Earlier this month on 12 May, the family of geese were killed by a driver while crossing Wilkie Road, Barrow..

Good samaritan ensures geese cross road safely in Walney after family of birds ploughed into

A GOOD samaritan went above and beyond to ensure a family of geese crossed the road safely after a ‘horrifying’ incident saw more than a dozen birds killed. A kind-hearted mum alerted drivers after spotting a family of geese and goslings crossing the road in Mill Lane, Walney. The mum was collecting her daughter from nursery when she noticed the family of birds walking across the road. To prevent any accidents, the quick-thinker directed cars away from the geese so they could safely make it to the other side. She said: “I was on my way to collect my daughter from nursery (on foot) and I noticed the geese and goslings walking on the road.

Community backs fundraiser to save birds from tragic deaths

COMMUNITY members are coming together to raise funds after a tragic incident left a family of geese dead. The fundraiser is aiming to raise £750 to help raise money for increased signage and security of the wildfowl on Ormsgill Reservoir . In less than a day, the fundraiser had reached £247 towards the cause. It came after a number of geese were run over on Wednesday night as they crossed Wilkie Road, near Barrow AFC s ground, with several dying as a result. The fundraiser s creator, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: It s about the fourth year this has happened, and I was unfortunate enough to witness the one about four years ago. If you see it, it is absolutely horrific. You ve got babies who are either squished and the adults sat by them, or adults looking for babies. It will never leave you.
