KARACHI: A sessions’ court has acquitted alleged Lyari gang warfare kingpin Uzair Baloch in two more cases for “lack of evidence” against him.
Baloch, chief of the defunct Peoples Amn Committee, was exonerated of the charges of attacking policemen in the violence-torn Lyari neighbourhood during a crackdown against gangsters in 2012.
Additional District and Sessions’ Judge (South) Faraz Ahmed Chandio recently pronounced his verdict.
Police had nominated Habib Jan Baloch, Wasiullah Lakho, Umar Kachhi and Sharfuddin as suspects in the case and showed M. Kashif and Faisal Mehmood as absconders.
Transgender person gunned down in Korangi

An elderly transgender person was gunned down in Karachi’s Korangi neighbourhood on Monday. An Awami Colony police official said that the incident took place in Bilal Colony.
The official said that two unidentified persons barged into the victim’s house, shot him and then escaped leaving him seriously wounded. The injured was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he breathed his last during treatment, he added.
The policeman identified the victim as 60-year-old Siddiq, alias Mumtaz, saying that he was a transgender person. The culprits had shot at him after asking for his name, he added. The official said that the murder might have been committed over a personal enmity, adding that the police have picked up two empty shell casings of a 30-bore pistol from the crime scene.

The Sindh Rangers and police claimed to have arrested two suspected members of a robbers gang and three extortionists associated with the Lyari gang war in separate operations. The suspects were handed over to the police along with the weapons and ammunition confiscated from their possession, said a Rangers spokesperson on Wednesday.
According to him, three members of a most wanted extortionist group were arrested in joint-operation of the paramilitary force and police in Lyari.
