The Indian Civil Society has lambasted the Narendra Modi-led New Delhi regime for its criminal negligence amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, arguing that the Indian government has lost its credibility to represent the people of India, and called for strong global political commitment to address the challenges in public health care.
Several platforms could not be used as ashes lay unclaimed for days
Noida: Apart from handling 50-60 bodies daily, Antim Niwas in Sector 94 has been forced to deal with another challenge. Many family members are not turning up to collect the remains of their relatives and as a result, the crematorium is running out of space.
Several platforms could not be used as ashes lay unclaimed for days. The crematorium staff said that daily, five to six such cases are taking place.
For the past one week, more than 60 cremations were conducted at Antim Niwas daily. Though immersion of ashes is considered an important ritual, some families somehow have been unable to visit the centre to collect them.
With only two CNG furnaces in Antim Niwas to carry out Covid funerals, people are now burning the dead on the pavements due to the additional rush
NOIDA: Between April 1 and 23, when the official death toll inflicted by the Covid-19 pandemic stood at 137 in Gautam Budh Nagar, there were 1,185 cremations following Covid protocols at the two CNG furnaces in Antim Niwas, the crematorium s records show.
The two CNG furnaces at the crematorium in Noida s Sector 94 are being used solely for Covid patients. Crematorium managers said most bodies were brought there from hospitals in Gautam Budh Nagar, and about 25% were from hospitals in neighbouring NCR districts like Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Meerut, Mathura, Gurgaon, Faridabad, etc.

Cremation of Covid patients is being carried out using traditional ways too. This data is not captured in the number of cremations at the two CNG furnaces. Non-Covid cremations are also taking place at Antim Niwas, on the platforms meant for pyres.
Noida: Operators of the city’s largest cremation ground, Antim Niwas, launched an online registration service on Thursday for conducting last rites.
“People looking to cremate bodies can send required documents through WhatsApp (8448153825). Once those are verified, they will be allocated a slot with a unique code. We are trying to issue a number along with the time slot so that the process can be smooth. There has been a lot of rush at the facility and people are having to queue up for hours,” said Mahesh Saxena general secretary of Lok Manch, the NGO that manages the Sector 94 facility on behalf of Noida Authority.
