MSC Cruisesâ Upcoming Ships to Further Companyâs Environmental Commitment
2021 will see two new MSC Cruises ships come into service, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Seashore, the latest ships to be delivered as part of the Companyâs long-term new builds program.
As every ship that joins the MSC Cruises fleet, these ships are being equipped with a wide range of latest-generation environmental technologies and equipment that will minimize their impact.
Both ships will feature hybrid exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS) and cutting-edge selective catalytic reduction systems (SCR), achieving a 98% reduction of sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions and reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 90%.
Turning cruising green will be the biggest change in marine technology since steam power replaced sails in the 18th century, according to Linden Coppell, MSC Cruisesâ director of sustainability.
The Swiss-based line has joined a major European project with universities and tech companies â including the British firm Silverstream Technologies â to research the best ways to achieve low-carbon cruises. Results will be shared across the industry.
Alternative energy sources such as biofuel are being considered as part of MSC Cruisesâ long-term plan to cut ship emissions to zero. Itâs not going to be an easy journey, but this is big for the shipping industry and itâs big for us, said Linden Coppell.
