2021 primary in Lancaster County: Mail-in ballot issues complicate low-turnout election

An error by Lancaster County s mail-in ballot vendor means more than half of all mail-in ballots will have to be hand-counted, causing a significant delay in final results – likely into the weekend.  Michigan Elections Resources printed multi-sheet ballots in the wrong order, affecting approximately 14,000 ballots, Lancaster County Board of Elections officials said Tuesday. Those ballots cannot be fed through the county’s ballot scanners.   Roughly 27,000 mail-in ballots were requested for the primary. As of Tuesday afternoon, nearly 18,000 had been returned.  We ll be starting the hand count at the end of the week, weekend; we re fleshing that out at the moment,  said Christa Miller, chief clerk of the board of elections. She said she anticipates the hand county will take three to four days to complete, and final results will be available by early next week.

Been busy the whole time. She added that there was a steady trickle in the first hour and half so far.

From Our Inbox: Letters to the Editor for the Week Ending May 14, 2021

By Noozhawk Editors | 9:00 p.m. In the May 11 Noozhawk article, “Santa Barbara Ordinance Committee Supports 15% Inclusionary Housing Requirement,” we read about a new proposal to increase Santa Barbara’s mandatory low-income housing inclusionary rules for new residential properties that was reimposed two years ago. Once again, we see our elected officials making rules, without understanding the costs of developing property in the city (with all of the myriad regulatory requirements, both state and local), thinking that will magically result in more “affordable” housing being produced. Perhaps they should look back to see that, when these types of restrictions were in place years ago, NO rental housing was produced for about 40 years.
