Covid marshals to be removed in South Gloucestershire

Covid marshals in South Gloucestershire are being axed this week – but councillors fear it is “too abrupt”. Kingswood ward Labour Cllr Andrea Reid says the fact more people will be out and about, combined with growing uncertainty over easing of lockdown because of the Indian coronavirus variant, mean the hi-vis officials are needed more than ever. South Gloucestershire Council has confirmed the 10 daytime marshals are being phased out from Sunday (May 23), with them all being stood down by Friday, May 28. At the first in-person full council meeting since the start of the pandemic, Cllr Reid said: “I’m mindful of the unknown factors with regard to the Indian variant of Covid-19, and we know currently the easing of restrictions is still in doubt.

Thornbury High Street: Common sense must prevail

As the Thornbury High Street consultation comes to an end, we want to hear your views.  Vote in our poll or write to letters@gazetteseries.co.uk. We will be sharing your letters, like the one below, every day until the consultation closes at the end of the month.  As a resident of Thornbury for nearly 50 years, I would appeal for common sense to prevail and when we have survived the threat of coronavirus, that the High Street in Thornbury is not spoilt by a very bad decision to make the temporary closure to traffic a permanent one. This unique medieval market town owes its survival to date to the hard working individual tradespeople of Thornbury and also the residents who patronise them.
