Amid talks with Iranian authorities, signals push for completion of project
In its latest push to develop Iran’s Chabahar port project, India handed over two 140-tonne cranes for loading and unloading equipment to the Iranian government on Sunday.
The cranes, part of a full consignment of six Mobile Harbour Cranes (MHC) worth about $25million were sourced from Italy and formally released at a ceremony at Chabahar’s Shahid Beheshti port after official talks between India and Iran.

This engagement further solidified with the holding of a recent virtual bilateral summit. On December 11, 2020, Prime Minister of the Republic of India, Narendra Modi and President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, co-chaired a virtual summit between the two countries. This was significant as it marked the first time that India has held a bilateral summit with any country located in the Central Asia.

The first Trilateral Working Group Meeting between India, Iran and Uzbekistan on the joint use of Chabahar Port was held virtually on Monday.
The trilateral marked a quick move in diplomacy. It was held three days after the proposal was mooted by Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during a virtual summit with PM Narendra Modi on December 11.
Uzbekistan’s interest in using Chabahar Port marks a flexing point in India’s efforts to carve out a communication route to Afghanistan and Central Asia that outflanks Pakistan.
Iran and Uzbekistan welcomed India’s proposal to hold Chabahar Day” on the sidelines of the International Maritime Summit scheduled to be hosted by India next month, read an MEA statement.
