About a mile uphill from the fountain, I never hear the sound of a pickup truck, or an SUV or even a semi-trailer truck hitting the iconic granite monument that sits smack dab in the middle of Geneseo’s Main Street.
But someone will call, often a friend who doesn’t live in our picture-perfect college town.
Or maybe it’s the Democrat and Chronicle’s Marcia Greenwood, who knows everything before anyone else, and who recently reported on the fountain’s latest brush with a vehicle, the third such encounter in the last few weeks and one of many the last five years.

Less than a week after Rochester set a daily snowfall record (2.8 inches on April 21), the forecast is looking more spring-like.
Monday will be clear, sunny and crisp throughout the greater Rochester area, with a high temperature of 50 degrees, said Liz Jurkowski, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Buffalo.
By midnight, however, a line of showers will move through, lasting two to three hours, she said.
It will be dry by 6 a.m. Tuesday. Clear skies are expected throughout the day, and the high should reach 65.
Wednesday will be the warmest day, Jurkowski said. An unseasonable high of 77 is expected but so are showers and thunderstorms. (The record high for that date is 93, set in 1990.) There is a 20 percent chance of precipitation in the morning and a 50 percent chance in the afternoon, she said.
