Boy, 12, critically injured in accidental shooting

The victim, who was not named, is expected to survive, Muskegon Heights police Chief Maurice Sain said.
The shooting happened around 11 a.m. Saturday, May 8, at the victim’s home near Waalkes Street and West Cleveland Avenue.
The victim and another child found the gun. It did not contain a clip but police said there was a bullet in the chamber. The gun belonged to the victim’s mother, the chief said.

Chief Joseph Thomas left the department in October to move to a new department.
Maurice Sain has filled in an interim chief since.
Sain has served at MHPD for 22 years starting in 1999.
He says becoming police chief has always been on his list of career goals.

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, MI – In the beginning, it was his height that got Maurice Sain noticed by the Muskegon Heights chief of police.
Sain was playing basketball for Muskegon Community College when he met Chief George Smith. Smith took one look at the 6-foot-5-inch Sain and said, “I need some big guys like you on my police force,” Sain remembers.
The Muskegon Heights Police Department ended up sponsoring Sain’s attendance at the police academy. He’s worked for the department ever since.
Fast forward more than two decades and it’s Sain who’s chief of police – and looking for recruits for the police force.

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. Muskegon Heights City Council members have selected the city’s next police chief.
On Monday night, the council voted unanimously to promote Maurice Sain from “Interim Chief” to “Chief.” Sain replaces Joseph Thomas, who left Muskegon Heights to become the public safety director for Ecorse City in Wayne County.
“I m proud of the fact that I got a lot of the trust of the community and a lot of support from the community,” Sain said. “I m looking forward to continuing to hold the community accountable for helping us solve a lot of the crime – knowing that if they see something to say something, call us,
