The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams traveled to Wilton Tuesday for a River Valley Conference doubleheader and returned with a split. The Golden Hawk girls fell in the opener 43-38. Mid-Prairie got off to a tremendous start, opening the game on a 10-0 run, only to see Wilton answer with a 14-3 run, to take a 14-13 lead in the second quarter. The second frame belonged to the defenses, with each team scoring four to leave Mid-Prairie on top 17-15 at half. While the Golden Hawk defense kept them in the game, the offense struggled, going scoreless for more than five minutes and more than 12 minutes with just one field goal in a stretch of the second and third periods as Wilton took a 27-20 lead. Late in the third, Mid-Prairie got on track as Myah Lugar knocked down the first of four consecutive three point goals to get the Hawks within 27-23. The Mid-Prairie boys and girls basketball teams hosted the Bellevue Comets Friday in a River Valley Conference doubleheader. The Golden Hawk girls fell to the sixth ranked Comets 47-34. Mid-Prairie started quickly, opening the game on a 10-1 run and leading 12-5 after one quarter and 21-17 at half. The Comets took control of the game out of half with a 16-5 run that lasted the entire third quarter and put the game away outscoring the Hawks 14-8 in the fourth. Bellevue outrebounded Mid-Prairie 31-22 and turned the Golden Hawks over 18 times. Teresa Paulsen put together a double double for Bellevue with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Ka’Lynn DeShaw added 12 points. Mid-Prairie was led by Maddie Nonnenmann’s 19 points and nine rebounds. Bellevue improves to 15-1 with the win, Mid-Prairie falls to 8-8.
It’s a Washington County showdown in Wellman tonight when the Mid-Prairie basketball teams welcome Washington for a girl/boy doubleheader.
The girls’ game has ended in the Golden Hawks favor five of the last six seasons, but the Demons claimed victory last year with a 45-41 win. Mid-Prairie is 8-8 out of the River Valley Conference and Maddie Nonnenmann provides much of the offense with 13.4 points and 6.7 rebounds a night. The Golden Hawks look to get back in the win column after a 47-34 loss to Bellevue on Friday. The Demons are riding high after a 36-35 season sweep of Burlington to improve to 2-13 on the season. The offense is trying to find consistency with just 32 points a game and Anna Nacos accounts for 10 of those.

They were last in action a over week ago when they beat Tipton on Senior Night in Wellman 38-33 behind Maddie Nonnenmann’s 13 points and Phelan Hostetler’s 11. On the season, the Hawks are led by Nonnenmann at 13 points and seven rebounds per game. Amara Jones leads Mid-Prairie with four assists and three steals per game.
Bellevue is 14-1 on the season, 13-1 in the River Valley Conference. The Comets are ranked No. 6 in class 2A in the most recent poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Winners of eight in a row, they beat Wilton last time out 51-41 behind 16 points from Audrey Wedeking.
