VANCOUVER Some 100 British Columbians have had their open-heart surgeries postponed in the past two months due to a shortage of critical resources required by the sickest COVID-19 patients, according to sources within the medical system. When CTV News Vancouver asked the Provincial Health Services Authority about the estimate, the authority did not deny its accuracy, but insisted that the most dire cardiac procedures are still taking place at the same rate as usual. “From February 2020 to May 2021, no critical cardiac surgeries were postponed in B.C.,” wrote a spokesperson in an email. “With the focus on urgent and critical cases, B.C. was able to ensure that all cardiac surgical procedures were completed aligned with recommended wait time targets.”
