Earlier this month, the MultiChoice Talent Factory Academy graduated its second set of 20 students via a virtual ceremony.
The students, whose course work was extended from 12 months to 18 months due to the pandemic, took a 3-week intensive New York Film Academy (NYFA) course on the production of micro-documentaries, Public Service Announcements (PSAs) and music videos.
They also worked with the United Nations on the global #PledgeToPause campaign which exposed them to global networks, thus walking away with two certificates – one from the prestigious Pan-Atlantic University (PAU) and an equally illustrious qualification from the New York Film Academy of Visual and Performing Arts (NYFA).
When it comes to entertainment on the continent, Nigeria’s status and influence cannot be ignored. From having the second-largest movie industry in the world to the most recognized music with globally known stars like Wizkid and Davido, Nigerian entertainers lead the way as Africa makes its mark in worldwide entertainment.
The country did not achieve its position as Africa’s entertainment powerhouse overnight. It was done gradually with consistent, high-quality output and, more importantly, widespread distribution. MultiChoice Nigeria contributed significantly to this success.
Since its establishment in the 90s, MultiChoice Nigeria has been intentional about producing and distributing locally-sourced content and talent. The change was most evident in the film industry, which had constraints with the distribution of videocassette recorders (VCRs), compact disks (CDs), and digital video disks (DVDs) due to piracy and logistics.
Seven short films aimed at combating COVID-19 misinformation were produced by the 2020 cohort of the MultiChoice Talent Factory Academy, putting the talents of young African filmmakers to work on one of the biggest challenges of our time.
The films were part of the United Nations’ Pause campaign, a wider behaviour change campaign that aimed to create a new social media norm to help combat the rising impact of viral misinformation. The short films were aired on MultiChoice channels between 9 December and 31 December 2020. The MultiChoice Group provided the airtime as part of the ongoing support of the campaign.
