Town of Unicoi hosting Back-2-School Blowout

The town of Unicoi is inviting kids to splash into the new school year at their Back-2-School Blowout on Aug. 6. The Back-2-School Blowout will begin at 7 p.m. at the Unicoi Visitor’s Center. The luau-themed event will feature a slip-n-slide, water shooters, a crazy sprinkler, a water balloon war and an inflatable obstacle course. Following the water fun, an island-themed disney movie will begin. “This will be the perfect end to summer,” said Communications and Programs Director Ashley Shelton. “We’ve added a few new items this year, like the inflatable obstacle course, and we’ve redesigned the slip-n-slide to have just a little more slope than when we debuted it two years ago.”

Ordinance to amend Town of Unicoi s budget dies during BMA meeting

An ordinance to amend the town of Unicoi’s 2021-22 fiscal year budget died Monday due to a lack of a motion during the town’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting. The ordinance contained several significant amendments, one of which was the addition of $16,329 of sales tax revenues that were previously left off the budget. “When we worked our budget up, we wanted to be very, very, very conservative, so we did not even estimate what the revenues might be,” said Mayor Kathy Bullen. The town also received a $54,321 local government direct appropriation grant, which the ordinance would have amended to add to both the town’s revenue and expenditures. While the funds are not committed, Bullen said an expenditure of the same amount must also be included to keep the budget balanced.

Crumb Bakeshop opens on West Walnut Street

Family is central to sisters-in-law Katelyn and Lauren Jones. It’s a concept that is at the heart of their new bakery in Johnson City. “We feel like food really brings people together,” Lauren said. “If you have that coffee cake from childhood or something that triggers good nostalgic memories, I feel like that’s super important.” After selling their goods wholesale and baking out of Boone Street Market in Jonesborough and Mountain Harvest Kitchen in Unicoi, the duo officially opened Crumb Bakeshop’s first brick-and-mortar location at 500 W. Walnut St. last Thursday. Katelyn said the bakery’s products are Jewish-inspired, pulling from her grandmother’s recipes and the delis and bakeries she and her brother Josh grew up with.

Unicoi suspends work on trails & amphitheater

UNICOI — The town of Unicoi has put the brakes on three of its most prominent capital projects. The Unicoi Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted Monday to suspend activity and spending on the development of an extension of Pinnacle Fire tower trail, construction of amphitheater at Unicoi Village Place and the proposed Erwin/Unicoi connector trail. Alderman Roger Cooper made the motion to halt the projects until the board can determine their value to residents of Unicoi and Unicoi County. In a discussion of the projects, Cooper said the planned extension of a trail from the Pinancle Firetower Trailhead to the town visitors center would be impacted by the anticipated construction of a travel center on Unicoi Village Place Road.
