Ordinance to amend Town of Unicoi s budget dies during BMA meeting

An ordinance to amend the town of Unicoi’s 2021-22 fiscal year budget died Monday due to a lack of a motion during the town’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting. The ordinance contained several significant amendments, one of which was the addition of $16,329 of sales tax revenues that were previously left off the budget. “When we worked our budget up, we wanted to be very, very, very conservative, so we did not even estimate what the revenues might be,” said Mayor Kathy Bullen. The town also received a $54,321 local government direct appropriation grant, which the ordinance would have amended to add to both the town’s revenue and expenditures. While the funds are not committed, Bullen said an expenditure of the same amount must also be included to keep the budget balanced.

Town of Unicoi hosting free drive-in movie series

Get the popcorn ready, because Friday is movie night in Unicoi. The town of Unicoi will host its first free drive-in movie of the summer on Friday, June 18, at the Tourist Information Center. The Movies in the Park series, which played one free movie per month during June, July and August, was moved from the Bogart-Bowman Cabin to the Tourist Information Center, where the event became a drive-in last year due to COVID-19. “The drive-ins were such a hit last year that we’ve decided to keep that format,” Communications and Programs Director Ashley Shelton said. “Parking is easier, concessions are more accessible and the entire experience of a drive-in was something the kids really enjoyed.”

Letters: Asphalt plant questions, Healing

Unicoi shouldn’t bend over for asphalt plant I’m responding to recently published comments by Town of Unicoi Mayor Kathy Bullen in which she “wants to dispel asphalt plant rumors.” Many of the points the mayor made were accurate and valid, but some were not, and I’d like to respond to a couple of them. First, she said that as mayor she must represent all landowners and that Summers-Taylor is a landowner. True enough. However, she is weighing the concerns of one landowner (who doesn’t even live in Unicoi County) over those of the people living in 550 homes within one mile of the plant (most of whom are landowners) whose health, property values, and overall quality of life would be adversely affected if there is a major expansion of the asphalt plant. That is in no way an equivalent comparison. It’s very one-sided.
