My home country, Malawi, has made international headlines for discarding COVID-19 vaccines. Many fingers have pointed to hesitancy and misinformation, but the reality is far more complicated, and increasingly concerning.
In fact, the unused doses are consequences of failures to support the complex delivery system that gets vaccines into arms. And the effects on people’s lives are dire – for COVID-19 and other health emergencies.
Women farmers in Malawi have been advised to embrace crop diversification as one way of beating the effects of climate change that the country has always been experiencing over the years.
Speaking during Independent Dialogue on Gender Equality for Food Systems Transformation in Malawi held at Ufulu Garden in Lilongwe on Friday, a lecturer at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural resources (LUANAR), Dr. Judith Kamoto, said crop diversification provides smallholder farmers with a diversity of diet, improves their income and nutrition security.

The event was organized by the Malawi Irish Consortium on Gender Based Violence (MICGBV) in collaboration with the Irish Forum for International Agricultural Development (IFIAD). It brought together various key players in the agriculture sector.
Mihowa- domestic debts unsustainable
Lilongwe, Mana: Oxfam has said the current domestic debt remains unsustainable and there was need to critically review it if the country’s economy was to grow to expected levels.
Oxfam Malawi Country Director, Lingalireni Mihowa made the observation recently during the Budget Analysis Report Dissemination meeting with Parliamentary Committees at Sunbird Capital Hotel in Lilongwe
She noted that over 15 percent of the budgetary allocation was meant to serving domestic debts which were huge amount of a single sector could have utilized it to implement a number of programmes.
Mihowa added that only budgetary allocation for the 2021/2022 financial year, domestic debts stand second after Ministry of education on its allocation
