The United Purpose energy programme is currently centred in Malawi, where we are seen as a sector leader and have been responsible for over 500,000 households accessing cleaner cooking technologies and 25,000 households accessing solar lighting. This includes the establishment of Malawi’s first smart metered solar-PV micro-grid, as well as four village level solar kiosk businesses. We are the Secretariat of the National Cookstove Steering Committee and have taken a leading role in reaching the Government of Malawi’s 2 million stoves by 2020 achievement. We believe in market-based approaches where possible, but also have a strong leave-no-one-behind philosophy, as demonstrated by our innovative integration of energy access with the Social Cash Transfer programme, reaching over 150,000 ultra-poor households to date.
