According to The Humane League, Whole Foods Market will begin higher animal welfare standards for chickens in its supply chain. This makes Whole Foods the first major US retailer to sign on to all parts of the Better Chicken Commitment.

Whole Foods will phase out live-shackle slaughter in its chicken suppliers, with full removal for all 487 locations by 2026. Live-shackle slaughter is ubiquitous in chicken factory farms. In this process, a chicken is shackled, yanked upside down, and then undergoes an electrical bath to knock her unconscious before her throat is slit and she’s dumped into boiling water.

Animal welfare organization Aquatic Life Institute (ALI) is leading an effort to define animal welfare standards for wild and farmed aquatic animals by spearheading research and forming the first coalition for aquatic animal welfare. ALI created the Aquatic Animal Alliance (AAA) to advocate for change within the industry. The coalition is made up of leading animal protection organizations, including The Humane League, Compassion in World Farming, and Mercy for Animals (MFA).
“The number of aquatic animals who suffer as a result of human exploitation is staggering,” Walter Sanchez-Suarez, Animal Behavior and Welfare Scientist for MFA, told VegNews. “As our most recent investigation into a US fish farm uncovered, fishes are often subjected to horrific abuse that would never happen to other sentient beings such as dogs, chickens, or pigs. (New York, NY – December 9, 2020) – One of the world’s largest restaurant groups, Restaurant Brands International (RBI), owner of leading brands Burger King, Popeyes, and Tim Hortons, today released comprehensive global cage-free policies. This commitment to improving its animal welfare policies occurred within 44 days of the launch of a public campaign by the Open Wing Alliance, a coalition of more than 75 major animal protection organizations.
The new global policy released by Restaurant Brands International (RBI) commits each brand to sourcing 100% cage-free eggs and egg products for every single one of their locations worldwide. This transition will be complete by the end of 2025 for 92% of RBI’s global markets (North America, Western Europe, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand).
