The arrest of a Killeen police officer last week stemmed from a belt that was thrown and hit a 5-year-old girl, according to a court document released Monday.
The Killeen Police Department announced the arrest of 29-year-old KPD officer Laura Smith on Friday in a news release. On Monday, the Herald obtained Smithâs arrest affidavit and KPD also released Smithâs booking photo.
According to the affidavit, police arrived at a residence Wednesday after receiving information that a child had been injured at the home. KPD did not release the location of the residence. Officers interviewed the father of the child who told them Smith, who is his wife, had thrown a belt that struck his 5-year-old daughter in the head, the affidavit said.

During a status hearing on Wednesday in the countyâs oldest unresolved capital murder case, a Bell County judge indicated that he would like to keep the gag order that he put in place in 2015.
Defense attorneys for Marvin Louis Guy, who has been held in the Bell County Jail since being booked more than seven years ago, filed a motion on June 4 to have the order lifted. The gag order prevents members of the media from obtaining comments outside of court from attorneys or any other people involved in the case.
The 27th Judicial District Court judge indicated that he would like to keep it in place.
