Photo supplied The new chair of the Northern NSW Local Health District board says overseeing development of the new Tweed hospital will be his main priority in the role. Mark Humphries has been promoted from his deputy chair position to lead the local health district board after the departure of Dr Brian Pezzutti. The district is responsible for state health services from Grafton in the south to Tweed in the north. Nearly 3,000 babies born in region’s state hospitals in 2020 More than 210,000 people went to state emergency departments in the region last year, Mr Humphries says, with 96,000 people admitted to hospital in general and 32,000 arriving by ambulance.

A man has died and another has been rushed to hospital after a boat capsized on a remote river on Friday morning. Emergency crews were rushed to The Sandon on the Sandon River, 60km south of Yamba in northern New South Wales, about 7am following reports a boat had flipped over and two men were thrown into the water. A 48-year-old man was pulled from the water after washing ashore but died at the scene despite members of the public trying desperately to revive him through CPR. Health chief confirms staff level review after complaints

After horrific stories involving violence towards nursing staff and patients was revealed in state parliament and in a new report into hospital security, the Local Health District said it is investigating staffing levels. On Thursday February 18, 2021, Northern NSW Local Health District chief executive Wayne Jones confirmed they will review the recommendations in the Anderson report into security at NSW hospitals. We look forward to working with the NSW Ministry of Health on implementing supported recommendations across hospitals in our District, Mr Jones said. Hospital wards are staffed in accordance with the staffing requirements contained within the Public Health System Nurses and Midwives (State) Award with the consent of the NSW Nurses Association.
