Twin Cedars had their first home matchup since their return to play Tuesday and they once again had a split. The Sabers girls bested Seymour 42-40 and the boys fell 51-48 in a couple of nail biting games in Bussey.
Cheyanne Burns led the team in scoring with 13 points to go with four steals and four blocks. Brooke Roby added another 12 points and added eight rebounds. Twin Cedars held on despite losing three of their four top scorers in the fourth quarter due to fouling out and an injury. At 7-6 overall (5-2 in conference), the Sabers have their best record since 2012 at this point of the season.
The second game back for the Sabers was a mirror image of the first as they split a double header at Diagonal Monday. The Twin Cedars girls won 35-34 and the boys fell 48-40.
The Sabers’ girls were led by Brooke Roby’s 12 points, 5 assists, and 5 steals, but it was Cheyanne Burns who played hero as she scored the winning basket with less than 30 seconds left. At 6-6, this is the latest into a season that Twin Cedars has been .500 or better since 2012. Head Coach Trent Verwers adds that he needed to incorporate all of his girls as Diagonal closed in on Roby defensively the entire game, which led to a “great team win.”
While the wait to return to action for Twin Cedars basketball continues, their stud underclassmen are poised to lead the way for a couple hungry squads when that time comes.
Junior Brooke Roby leads the girls with 111 points in 10 games played, with the next closest having scored just 65. Not only that, but she leads the Sabers in all five major statistical categories, with the exception of rebounds. She actually has to share that crown with sophomore Kisha Reed as both sit deadlocked at 52 apiece.
Junior Devin Arkema has 92 points through all seven of Twin Cedars’ contests. Beneath him is a two way tie for second with 69 points each. Arkema also leads the team in steals and blocks, being the only Saber receiving credit at all in the latter category.
The Twin Cedars Girls Basketball Squad finished the 1st part of the season with a 4-6 record. The Sabers have seen improvement from all of the girls, especially Rylee Dunkin and Cheyenne Bruns. Both have raised their scoring average by five points from last season. Coach Trent Verwers tells KRLS Sports the girls are getting the fact that they can no longer be the Brooke Roby show and everyone needs to contribute to have a chance to win.
Verwers:
“Rylee Dunkin and Cheyenne have picked up the scoring when Brooke has an off night. We just knew that was going to happen if we were going to win, and five points here and four points there is going to go a long way to giving us a chance in every game.”
Devin Arkema erupted for 30 points to lead the Twin Cedars Boys Basketball Squad to a 55-43 win over Southeast Warren last night, while the girls fell to the Warhawks 49-30. After a slow start that saw the Saber boys score just two points in the first eight minutes of the game, Twin Cedars grabbed the lead before halftime outscoring Southeast Warren 22-9 in the second quarter as Arkema scored 14 of his 30 points in the second frame. Coach Blake McWilliams told KRLS Sports, Arkema had his complete game on display last night.
Twin Cedars placed three players in double figures to compliment Arkema as Kade Dunkin scored 11 points and Jace Nichols tallied ten. The girls could not muster enough offense to stay with Southeast Warren on Friday as the Sabers fell behind by double figures in the first half and could not get closer than 11 points after the break. Brooke Roby led all scorers with 19 points. The Saber boys finish the pre-Christmas portion of the season at 3-4 while the girl
