The Fairfield City Council met last night and approved several appointments. Retired Illinois State Police District 19 Commander Richie Fulkerson was appointed as the new Chief of Police; Keith Colclasure was appointed Assistant Chief of Police, with Alderman Dewey Eckleberry voting no. Andrew Miller and Wade Gregory were reappointed as Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chief. In his report last night, Mayor Mike Dreith said Fairfield police reported 77 traffic stops in May and issued 32 citations. They also gave property owners seven warnings and eight citations for local ordinance violations. Fairfield firefighters responded to 48 incidents last month, with 43 of them coming as EMS assists.

Fairfield Police Officer Kody Moore spoke to Fairfield Rotarians yesterday about the city's every-growing drug problem. He said they have responded to 12 overdoses this year and rendered life-saving aid with Narcan, but some residents have passed away. He encourages people to contact police if they see suspicious activity of any kind instead of simply talking about it on social media, where authorities may or may not see it. Fairfield Mayor Mike Dreith is anticipated to propose several appointments at Tuesday's City Council meeting, including for Police and Fire chiefs and assistant police and fire chiefs. The Assistant Police Chief position went unfilled last June after the former council voted 5-3 against reappointing the former assistant chief. Several other city positions have not yet seen appointments, including City Collector, Treasurer, and Attorney. Governor J.B. Pritzker said earlier this week the state is set to move forward to Phase Five of his Restore Illinois Plan on June 11th. Over half the state's population is fully vaccinated, per the CDC, and COVID-19 numbers are declining across the state. Phase Five is a full re-opening, with all sectors of the economy, businesses, schools, and recreation resuming normal operations- with new safety guidance and procedures. The Wabash County Health Department announced four new cases of COVID-19 in the past week, bringing its total to 1,310; two people were in isolation. Wayne County did not release an update. The state Department of Public Health announced 478 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday and seven additional deaths. Statewide totals sat at 1,383,065 cases and 22,842 deaths. The Southern Region had a positivity rate of 1.3 percent on May 30th, down from 1.4 percent on the 29th. 25-year-old Brodey I. Murbarger appeared in Wayne County Circuit Court yesterday for a status hearing. His attorney said the review of discovery materials in the jail was going well, and he agreed to meet privately with the State's Attorney to discuss scheduling a jury trial. Another pre-trial conference was scheduled for June 29th at 9 a.m., and, barring a compelling reason against, that meeting will be in-person at the courthouse. 23-year-old Toria Emerson, 31-year-old Richard Emerson, and 42-year-old Troy Gwaltney saw additional charges filed against them, per online court records, over the weekend. The three faced counts of concealment of a homicidal death in relation to the death of 32-year-old Chase Mitchell in Saline County last year, and they now each face three counts of first-degree murder. FCHS Assistant Principal Bobby Wells says the school is planning to move away from the block schedule used for classes this past year, going back to a normal 8-3 format. He also says the school hopes to be completely maskless next year, but it is waiting to see where the CDC, IDPH, and state Board of Education guide them in the coming months.
