Fairfield Police Officer Kody Moore spoke to Fairfield Rotarians yesterday about the city's every-growing drug problem. He said they have responded to 12 overdoses this year and rendered life-saving aid with Narcan, but some residents have passed away. He encourages people to contact police if they see suspicious activity of any kind instead of simply talking about it on social media, where authorities may or may not see it. Fairfield Mayor Mike Dreith is anticipated to propose several appointments at Tuesday's City Council meeting, including for Police and Fire chiefs and assistant police and fire chiefs. The Assistant Police Chief position went unfilled last June after the former council voted 5-3 against reappointing the former assistant chief. Several other city positions have not yet seen appointments, including City Collector, Treasurer, and Attorney. After a wet start to the day, the weather cleared yesterday evening for the Fairfield City Band to play on the Wayne County Courthouse lawn. About 250 people attended the first of five City Band concerts after the band was off last year. The second performance will be next Thursday at 7 at the same location. Bond was set at $1 million for 55-year-old Mt. Vernon resident Frederick Goss, who was shot by a Mt. Vernon police officer in a shootout Wednesday morning. The Jefferson County State's Attorney's office issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm. The Marion County Health Department added two new cases of COVID-19 yesterday and sat at 4,501. Jefferson County added one, and Wayne County did not release an update. No new cases were announced in White, Hamilton, Edwards, or Wabash counties. The state Department of Public Health announced 674 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday and 23 additional deaths. Statewide totals sat at 1,383,739 cases and 22,865 deaths. The Southern Region had a positivity rate of 1.3 percent on May 31st, unchanged from the 30th. River stages as of early this morning: the Little Wabash east of Fairfield stands at 14.42 feet, below the 17 ft. flood stage. Meanwhile, the Skillet Fork at Wayne City has a reading of 5.39 feet (flood stage is 15 ft.). The Little Wabash below Clay City is at 7.23 feet (flood stage is 18 ft.). Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 14.51 feet, and the Little Wabash at Main Street in Carmi reads 20.47 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel sits at 10.05 feet.
