Guwahati: The second wave of COVID-19 has forced Assamese people living abroad to cancel all Rongali Bihu celebrations. Rongali or Bohag Bihu is special to every Assamese as this marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year. Rongali Bihu is an integral part of every Assamese person s life as this is time for exchanging gifts and celebrations.
The Assamese diaspora living abroad celebrate Rongali Bihu with a lot of pride. Celebrations held earlier has seen the participation of people belonging to other communities like Americans, British, Africans, and people from other Asian countries.

Bihu is a harvest festival that is celebrated in Northeast India. Bihu is celebrated thrice a year. The three sets of festivals include Magh or Bhogali Bihu which is celebrated in January, Bohag Bihu celebrated in April and Kati Bihu, which is celebrated in October.
Bohag Bihu starts mid-April and goes on for 7 days. The seven days are known as Chot Bihu, Goru Bihu, Manuh Bihu, Kutum Bihu, Senehi Bihu, Chera Bihu and Mela Bihu. Guwahati, Jan 20 : Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said on Wednesday that the Assembly elections in Assam would be held taking into consideration the Bihu festival in mid April and the CBSE board examinations.
Arora, who was accompanied by Election Commissioners Sushil Chandra and Rajiv Kumar and other senior officials, told the media that the elections would be held following the social distancing norms in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The CEC said that the election schedule would be prepared keeping in mind the examinations to be conducted by the Central Board Secondary Education for students of Classes X and XII in May-June.
