NEW DELHI: President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday said farming and farmers have contributed immensely to the progress and development of the country.
Extending greetings to fellow citizens on the eve of Lohri, which is on Wednesday, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Bhogali Bihu, Uttarayan and Poush Parva, on January 14, he said these festivals are an opportunity for the countrymen to honour the relentless hard work of the farmers.

Moranhat Town: Amid the news of bird flu spread in some of indian states, along with the other parts of the state, Moranjan village of Moran in Dibrugarh district of Assam is preparing for the celebration of Bhogali Bihu also known as Magh Bihu with full enthusiasm and joy.
Around 200 families of the village would be celebrating Magh Bihu together. The women folk were seen singing and dancing Bihu in the agriculture fields as they are getting ready to celebrate the harvest festival of Assam best known for feasting and celebrating good food.

Duck plague in Tripura adds to bird flu scare in the northeast
The Assam government on Friday temporarily banned the import of poultry ahead of the mid-January Bhogali Bihu, the festival of feasting where fowls are considered a must.
The ban is in view of bird flu cases elsewhere in India and partly due to a scare after the report of a duck plague in Tripura.
An official notification said: “In view of the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian Influenza in some of the States, which is a highly contagious avian disease having zoonotic potential of causing huge loss in terms of mortality and trade of poultry, the Governor of Assam is pleased to impose temporary ban on entry of poultry as a precautionary measure through western border of the States in the interest of preventing escalation of the disease to Ass
