Residents vie for school board positions

A number of candidates seeking to fill roles on school boards across Bedford County submitted nomination petitions this week. The deadline to submit petitions to appear on ballots for the May 18 primary election was on Tuesday. Bedford Area There are six candidates seeking four seats on the Bedford Area School District school board. In Area I, which covers a portion of Bedford Borough, Manns Choice, a portion of Bedford Township and Harrison Township, William Ross will seek re-election and appear on both ballots. There is one seat open in the area. In Area II, which includes a portion of Bedford Borough, a portion of Bedford Township and Snake Spring Township, C. Peder Flaaen is seeking re-election on the Republican ballot, while Jerry Bagley of Bedford filed petitions on both ballots. There is one seat open.

New sheriff substation launched in Maybee

MAYBEE Saying it would improve visibility of police officers and deter crime in the area, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough helped open a new sheriff substation in his hometown of Maybee. Amid sunny skies and spring-like readings, the sheriff assisted Village President Len Gaylor in cutting a yellow ribbon to the car bay and office located in the historic old village hall and fire station Tuesday with about two dozen people watching. The two-story brick building that dates back to 1912 will be used by deputies patrolling the northwest sector of the county. “This was a vision in partnership with the village back in January,” Goodnough said during the dedication. “Without their help, we couldn’t have done it. Our response times to the village and London, Exeter and Milan townships should be significantly improved.”

Driver killed in crash with utility pole in Monroe County Updated Mar 08, 2021; MONROE COUNTY, MI – A Monroe County man was killed early Saturday morning when his car left the road and hit a utility pole in Bedford Township. Nathan James Mahrt died March 6, in the single-vehicle crash on Summerfield Road east of Douglas Road in Bedford Township, north of the Ohio boarder, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Mahrt, 35, of Lambertville, was driving a silver 2020 Nissan 370Z at 3:46 a.m. south on Douglas Road when he lost control of his vehicle while turning on to Summerfield Road, police said. His car crashed into the utility pole and tree before coming to a stop, police said.
