The deputy makes a new friend
NEWPORT A Monroe County sheriff s deputy was on police duty when he unexpectedly made a new friend.
Deputy Zachary Straub had responded to a call in the Marshall Fields subdivision near Newport when resident Wayne Braden spotted the patrol car Friday afternoon. Braden s 15-month-old grandson, Easton, happened to playing in his own police car at the time.
The deputy stopped and took the time to meet with the family and show the toddler a real-life police car. It was really something, Wayne Braden said. The deputy was awesome with my grandson. He didn t have to do that. He was great.
MAYBEE Saying it would improve visibility of police officers and deter crime in the area, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough helped open a new sheriff substation in his hometown of Maybee.
Amid sunny skies and spring-like readings, the sheriff assisted Village President Len Gaylor in cutting a yellow ribbon to the car bay and office located in the historic old village hall and fire station Tuesday with about two dozen people watching. The two-story brick building that dates back to 1912 will be used by deputies patrolling the northwest sector of the county.
“This was a vision in partnership with the village back in January,” Goodnough said during the dedication. “Without their help, we couldn’t have done it. Our response times to the village and London, Exeter and Milan townships should be significantly improved.”
