LUDHIANA: Irked over frequent dumping of debris by contractors at a vacant land in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, the area residents have approached the Punjab State Human Rights Commission, saying Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) officials are not acting on their complaints. It is 18 acres of prime land of LIT.
The residents said with the arrival of monsoon, it will create problems for them as along with debris, garbage, too, is being dumped at the site.
Arvind Sharma, an activist and resident of the area, said, “Some land is lying vacant in Block D of SBS Nagar where residential flats are to be constructed. There, hills of garbage and debris are being made by contractors who bring trolleys loaded with dump. We have raised the matter with officials several times, but to no avail. On Saturday evening, too, a trolley unloaded the debris at the vacant land. We recorded the activity and decided to approach the human rights commission.”

The residents rued that it takes a long time for the trees to grow and if pruning would be done so mercilessly, then how these will grow properly in future. Already, the city’ green cover is shrinking like anything and such kind of attitude will create more problems.
A resident of the area, Arvind Sharma, while complaining said, “Over a month ago similar kind of activity had been started in the area and trees were being pruned badly. When we raised the matter with LIT officials, even they had expressed ignorance about the pruning and claimed that they were yet to hire a contractor for the job. Any how, now, when the job has been allocated to a contractor, even then similar practice was going on in the area.” He said they had request

Ludhiana: After receiving complaints of poor sanitation in colonies maintained by Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT), the authorities plan to replace manual sweeping with the mechanized in these areas.
Mechanical sweeping will start from Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, as a number of its residents complained against poor sanitation. It will then cover colonies like Rishi Nagar, Rajguru Nagar and Sant Ishar Singh Nagar.
The LIT will float tenders for hiring an agency to do the job.
LIT officials said due to scarcity of manpower, sweeping remains a major concern. “We have received many complaints from residents of colonies about poor sanitation. We will hire a firm for mechanical sweeping in these colonies at a rate of Rs 625 per km,” they added.
