Scattered rain inundates parts of Ludhiana | Ludhiana News

LUDHIANA: Even as the city received scattered rainfall on Sunday, it left some areas waterlogged. The showers flooded Ferozepur Road, Chandigarh Road and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar. Residents said the authorities were yet to come out with a plan to resolve the problem, which bugs these areas every year. Chandigarh Road and Ferozepur Road have come under National Highways Authority of India due to an ongoing construction work there. A resident of Chandigarh Road, Dr Premjit Singh, said, “After a five-minute rainfall, our area was flooded. Sewerage lines are blocked from Jamalpur to Shingaar Cinema. The problem will not be resolved if these are not cleaned. Water from dyeing units in Focal Point adds to the area woes. Every monsoon, Chandigarh Road gets flooded at least 25 times.”

SBS Nagar residents approach rights panel against illegal dumping of debris | Ludhiana News

LUDHIANA: Irked over frequent dumping of debris by contractors at a vacant land in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, the area residents have approached the Punjab State Human Rights Commission, saying Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) officials are not acting on their complaints. It is 18 acres of prime land of LIT. The residents said with the arrival of monsoon, it will create problems for them as along with debris, garbage, too, is being dumped at the site. Arvind Sharma, an activist and resident of the area, said, “Some land is lying vacant in Block D of SBS Nagar where residential flats are to be constructed. There, hills of garbage and debris are being made by contractors who bring trolleys loaded with dump. We have raised the matter with officials several times, but to no avail. On Saturday evening, too, a trolley unloaded the debris at the vacant land. We recorded the activity and decided to approach the human rights commission.”

Petition filed in NGT over illegal felling of trees, causing severe damage to roots of trees | Ludhiana News

Ludhiana: Council of Engineers on Friday filed a petition with National Green Tribunal (NGT) against “illegal axing/felling” of trees and “causing severe damage” of roots of trees in the name of Urban Environment Improvement Programme by municipal corporation (MC) as well as Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT). Engineer Kapil Arora alleged that nine trees with ages varying around three to 35 years were axed by MC near Community Centre of BRS Nagar, Canal Bridge Ludhiana and the matter was raised with the chief conservator of forests (plain zones) as well as district forest officer of Ludhiana on March 30. He added that however, despite knowing the facts that there are directions of NGT, no action has been taken by them till date and now the trunks of axed trees have also been uprooted by the MC.
