After a rash of more armed carjackings in Rochester in April, many area residents are wondering why the Rochester region has seen a spike in carjackings.
Since March 28, there has been a series of carjackings, including the April 7 incident on Buell Road in Gates in which 71-year-old Richard Sciascia of Irondequoit was fatally shot while two males attempted to steal his car.
In the past week, police arrested two 16-year-old boys, accusing them of second-degree murder in connection with Sciascia s death. This week, Gates Police Chief Jim VanBrederode noted that at least one of the teens who is accused of fatally shooting Sciascia also is suspected of taking part in carjackings in at least two states, dating back to Feb. 28 at a Walmart parking lot in Florida.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) The Thursday preliminary hearing for one of the suspects in the deadly Gates attempted carjacking has been canceled because he was indicted by a grand jury on at least one count.
That’s according to the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office.
Anthony Jacobs, 16, was taken into custody on Friday after his mother brought him into the Gates Police Station. He pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder during his virtual arraignment the same day.
Jacobs was the second person arrested in the shooting death of Richard Sciascia on April 7 during an attempted carjacking on Buell Road in Gates.

GATES, N.Y. (WHEC) Edgar Tolentino, one of the 16-year-olds accused of murdering Richard Sciascia during an attempted carjacking on April 7, is wanted for stealing two cars near Tampa, Florida a month before the murder.
“This is going to be lengthy. Get your pens ready,” Gates Police Chief Jim Vanbrederode said at a news conference Monday.
At a news conference Monday, the chief laid out the timeline of Tolentino prior to and just after the murder of Sciascia.
February: Edgar Tolentino went to Hillsborough County, Florida, with an 18-year-old girl, to visit family.

VanBrederode laid out a timeline as part of his briefing Monday. He said the killing was preceded by a series of thefts, starting with Tolentino s alleged theft of two cars in Hillsborough. Police say the first theft happened in a Walmart parking lot on Feb.28, as Tolentino is accused of taking the car from someone after setting up a meeting over Facebook Marketplace. A similar theft happened on March 4.
