After a rash of more armed carjackings in Rochester in April, many area residents are wondering why the Rochester region has seen a spike in carjackings.
Since March 28, there has been a series of carjackings, including the April 7 incident on Buell Road in Gates in which 71-year-old Richard Sciascia of Irondequoit was fatally shot while two males attempted to steal his car.
In the past week, police arrested two 16-year-old boys, accusing them of second-degree murder in connection with Sciascia s death. This week, Gates Police Chief Jim VanBrederode noted that at least one of the teens who is accused of fatally shooting Sciascia also is suspected of taking part in carjackings in at least two states, dating back to Feb. 28 at a Walmart parking lot in Florida.
