Delaware: Police Accountability NOW, new campaign to push for reform

47abc April 23, 2021 DELAWARE- Putting on the pressure, Delaware civil rights and social justice groups launched a campaign this week in hopes of getting the General Assembly to get police reform passed. “I think that’s what makes this very unique is that all of the organizations have been advocating for police reform but not collaboratively and coordinating with one another,” Mike Brickner, Exec. Dir. for the ACLU of Delaware, said. The campaign is called, Delaware: Police Accountability NOW, made up of groups like the ACLU of Delaware and the NAACP of Delaware. They’re hoping to pressure the Law Enforcement Accountability Task Force and other lawmakers to pass police reform before the end of session.

Taking Ramone, Briggs King to task over wages

Ron Nicholls April 6, 2021 I read with disgust the stingy pro-business boohoo story by the two GOP legislators: Ramone and Briggs King, who pushed the same tired  “Chicken Little” story about the sky falling down if a $15 minimum wage went into effect over the next four years. They continued to state that the minimum wage “was last raised about 18 months ago, when it was increased to $9.25 per hour - a higher rate than 27 other states and 28 percent more than the federal minimum of $7.25.”  Their tone is that this was truly a tragic event, and did not mention that we joined the 27 states in the union where wages in general are low and union busting is an art form and which, by the way, all are controlled by the GOP.  They made it sound like a case of  “we just did it and why do we want to do it again?”  The same old GOP distortion about a $15 minimum wage is: fewer jobs, fewer hours, fewer profits for the owners, higher prices for consumers and hardship

Del Law Enforcement Accountability Task Force publishes interim report

47abc January 6, 2021 DELAWARE – Delaware’s Law Enforcement Accountability Task Force released its preliminary interim report. The task force is broken into four categories. Those include Use of Force and Imminent Danger, Workforce Development, Community Policing and Engagement, and Transparency and Accountability. Delaware State Representative Ruth Briggs King said during Tuesday’s LEATF meeting she’s happy to see progress being made. Rep. Briggs King also said she is already thinking ahead to how the task force can be even better. “There is an awful lot of overlap. So the idea is that we should be able to line these things up and then really make some targeted recommendations. But I do thank everyone,” said Rep. Ruth Briggs King.
