CommUNITY clean-up day brings more than just cleaner streets

CommUNITY clean-up day brings more than just cleaner streets June 26, 2021 GEORGETOWN, Del. – Residents spent the morning and early afternoon cleaning up the town, but it involved more than just picking up trash. They tell us they were focused on unity and bringing people together. “We missed being able to see people’s face, so this just makes me so happy,” says Laura Dye, a volunteer and Manager of a local Starbucks. Georgetown residents young and old came together for unity. We’re told this community clean up day is doing more than just making the town beautiful on the outside, it’s also about making the connections on the inside just as beautiful. Event organizers say, that starts with residents and businesses. “Create hope and opportunity for not just the residents but the business owners to create those connections and make them stronger,” says Barbara Carter, the Neighborhood Revitalization Coordinator for Sussex County Habitat for Humanity.

DE House passes legislation aiming to reduce gun violence and protect domestic violence victims

47abc May 19, 2021 House Bill 124 is a modification to current existing laws about people prohibited from purchasing a firearm. We’re told the person must know or have reason to know that they have a protective order against them or existing warrants. It also closes a loophole by ensuring that anyone knowing this information can’t purchase, own, or possess a firearm. We’re told one of the reasons this bill is so important is because many domestic violence related deaths in Delaware involved firearms. “Any law enforcement will tell you the two most difficult situations they have are those that involved domestic violence and it seems to be a routine stop that turns into something else, so focusing this on domestic violence and ensuring that those people that maybe do have possession, don’t have possession,” Rep. Ruth Briggs King, said.
