Staff and residents at Barchester’s Bradshaw Manor care home were invited to gather together flowers and foliage chosen by themselves and follow Michal’s demonstration to create their own displays. Residents’ arrangements were then entered into a Facebook competition judged by Michal and Michael, the visionaries behind Blooming Haus. Bradshaw Manor beat more than 100 other entries to win the Colour category in the competition with their impressive colourful display. Their prize is £100 in Love2Shop vouchers which they plan to spend on gardening equipment to continue our floral activities.

Rhyl charity bike ride to raise donations for Royal British Legion as 100th anniversary approaches

A VIRTUAL bike ride to the poppy fields of Flanders is aiming raise donations for veterans in need. Twelve cyclists from Rhyl will each clock up the 432-mile distance to the Belgian-French battlefields during February and March by using stationary exercise bikes and outdoor cycle routes. The fundraiser is being organised by the Rhyl branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) as the charity for Armed Forces veterans and the Poppy Appeal celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. Richard Kendrick, Poppy Appeal organiser for the Rhyl branch, said the virtual bike ride is one of many online fundraisers taking place this year to raise scarce donations amid surge in demand on the charity’s services during the coronavirus pandemic.

Spirits lifted as care home staff and residents receive Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine in Rhyl

A GP surgery started vaccinating care home residents in Rhyl last week. Residents at Barchester’s Bradshaw Manor Care Home, on Chester Street, receive their first vaccination from the team at Clarence Medical Centre. Heidi Crompton, general manager, said the vaccine has lifted the spirits of their workers and residents after a difficult year. She added: “We’ve had a year like no other and the vaccine feels like the light at the end of the tunnel. Our teams have been magnificent in how they have risen to every challenge during this pandemic and we are proud to play our part in this next phase to ensure the most vulnerable are protected.”

Christmas card appeal brings festive cheer to Rhyl care home as more than 480 are received

In December, the Journal lent its support to an festive card appeal launched by Richmond House in Rhyl; people were asked to send a greeting to residents to help lift spirits. About 480 cards have since been received and more are still arriving. Cards have arrived from across Wales and England and some have even been posted from places in America. Erika Jones, activities co-ordinator for Richmond House, said: The residents have been so grateful for every single card sent to them. We cannot believe how far the appeal reached and touched everyone with the appeal. What started off as a casual appeal has blossomed into something much bigger and heart warming.
