Another Bad Idea: Fannie and Freddie as Utilities
In the more than twelve years since their 2008 failure, nobody has been able to figure out how to end Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac being wards of the state, as their continued existence is wholly dependent on the generosity of the taxpayer by way of the U.S. Treasury’s credit. Many proposals, legislative and otherwise, for restructuring or replacing these behemoths have come and gone. Now, arguments are increasingly being made to retread these government sponsored enterprises (GSEs) as privately owned, public utilities. While this idea has its promoters, we believe it is fundamentally a bad idea. How the Government Mortgage Complex does love to propose rent-seeking solutions that operate with the largest possible government guarantee.
The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys golf team traveled to Tipton Monday for a River Valley Conference triangular with Monticello and the Tigers. The Hawks ended up third of three teams with their score of 202. Monticello won the meet with a 158 and Tipton was runner-up at 163. Meet medalist was Bob Ryan of Tipton with a round of 36. Mid-Prairie’s Dominic McCain led the Hawks with a medalist runner-up round of 38 that included an eagle, his third time in the 30s in three meets this year. Other scores for Mid-Prairie included Drew Schlabaugh 54, Warren Scarff and Aiden Bush 55, Ben Mattes 60 and Colin Miller 61. Mid-Prairie will next be in action Tuesday when they host their 18-hole Golden Hawk Invitational in Kalona.
