Basketball legend Paul Westphal received tributes online after dying Saturday at the age of 70 due to brain cancer.
Westphal was an All-Star player and NBA champion during his playing career, and he was also a highly successful head coach. He played from 1972 to 1984 and won a title with the Boston Celtics in 1974. Westphal also played for the Phoenix Suns, Seattle SuperSonics and New York Knicks.
As a coach, Westphal began his career at Southwestern Baptist Bible College, then moved to Grand Canyon University, and he became an assistant with the Phoenix Suns. Westphal took over as head coach of the Suns in 1992 and led them to the NBA Finals in his first season. He also had stints coaching Seattle and Sacramento, in addition to Pepperdine in college.
News from 10 years ago:
A tanker truck carrying a load of oil overturned on Ga. Highway 16, on the bridge over I-75 on Thursday, Dec. 23, spilling its load down the highway entrance ramp and down into the grassy right-of-way. There were no injuries in the accident, which closed the ramp for much of the day for cleanup.
A veterans memorial park planned for a small triangle of city property in downtown Jackson would have flags from all branches of the military, granite benches, a statue and a memorial wall, according to preliminary plans presented to the Jackson City Council on Dec. 21.

Keeping Score: What’s my line?

Good morning!
The UMass football team is 0-2 and has been outscored 92-10. The running backs are averaging under three yards a carry, and the quarterbacks have been sacked five times.
A good offensive lineman is hard to find, yet last season Ray Thomas-Ishman was let go as part of coach Walt Bell’s “we only want character guys” purge.
Any quarterback will tell you that a 6-5, 350-pound lineman has plenty of character. Bell, however, didn’t like Thomas-Ishman’s unresolved anger issues. Television viewers got a glimpse of those issues in 2017 when he went after teammate Jessie Britt during an injury timeout against Mississippi State.
A happy memory from an era when the Celtics werenât so good
The Celtics were bad once. The live music was good, though.

Me, the other day, to my friend, who likes sports: âDo you remember when the Celtics had big concerts after games? Because the team was so bad?â
My friend: [Silence.]
Me: âIt was a whole thing! They had, like, Chris Brown! The All-American Rejects! I had a seat right on the floor!â
