Now that indoor dining has reopened in Michigan, restaurants are being asked to voluntarily comply with the stateâs new âMI COVID-19 Safer Diningâ program.
Restaurants that want to become a certified safe dining space will have to work with a licensed HVAC contractor who can recommend changes to air ventilation to improve circulation and reduce the risk of COVID-19 spread.
The American Society for Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) has been guiding multiple states in writing new codes regarding indoor air issues, recommending a certification checklist businesses can follow to mitigate the spread of Covid-19. The CDC, EPA, and MI-OSHA are also helping businesses navigate this process, helping them develop best practices moving forward.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has granted restaurants the option to operate with limited indoor dining starting Tuesday, after months of having to survive on takeout and outdoor seating during a Michigan winter. Yet the damage thousands of restaurants have endured is likely to be lasting.
The state restaurant association estimates 3,000 restaurants have closed and contends that the industry employs 200,000 fewer people than it did last year as Whitmer’s “pause” on indoor dining meant establishments couldn’t take in holiday revenue.
Michigan has also been an outlier for these blanket restrictions only Washington state has a similar statewide ban on indoor dining which has encouraged Michigan residents who live close enough to the border to flock to neighboring states that have more relaxed restrictions.

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. (WXYZ) â The end of another shutdown is almost over, as restaurants across Michigan are getting ready to let their customers back inside.
âWe are so excited just to have people in here and to be warm again,â said Rachel Stemplewski, Taproom Manager at Griffin Claw Brewing in Birmingham. People have been out there in the snow, in the rain, in the freezing cold bringing blankets and pillows to sit on, anything to keep warm to support us.â
With fewer tables and bottles of hand sanitizer, it s easy to spot the changes the brewery made for indoor dining. However, their most important and most expensive change, is a bit harder to see.
