2020 a record year for plant-based, cultivated meat and sustainable protein companies

2020 ‘a record year for plant-based, cultivated meat and sustainable protein companies’ Last year was the biggest to date for sustainable protein company launches, private investments, and retail sales, according to the Good Food Institute, which has just released its annual State of the Industry reports covering the plant-based, cellular agriculture and fermentation sectors. Although the alternative protein sector still lags conventional meat and dairy, the GFI, a body working to support the development of alternative proteins, said it was hugely encouraged by the sector’s growth last year. Among the highlights of its report were that Western Europe is now the largest regional market for plant-based meat at $1.8 billion, making up 43% of the global plant-based meat market. The region grew 17% compared with 2019. Global retail sales of plant-based meat hit record highs in 2020, reaching $4.2 billion, up from $3.4 billion in 2019.

Consumer acceptance of cultivated meat, fat and dairy

Foods suggested a growing acceptance of non-meat diets in Germany and France. However, consumer awareness around cultured meat remained low. Even so, 44% of French and 58% of German respondents said they would be willing to try cultured meat, with 37% of French and 56% of German consumers saying they would be willing to buy it themselves. BioTech Foods has conducted its own research into consumer acceptance of cultivated meat. GettyImages/anyaivanova To date, limited research has been undertaken in consumer acceptance in Spain, where cultured meat start-up BioTech Foods is located. The company, headed up by co-founder Iñigo Charola, undertook its own research a couple of years ago to gauge public opinion, the CEO explained.

When will lab-grown meat reach the European market?

The question on every person’s (and farm animal’s) lips is put to industry experts from BioTech Foods and Peace of Meat. It is generally acknowledged that the lab-grown meat sector faces at least three key challenges: scalability and cost, consumer acceptance, and regulatory approval. This last point has had chins wagging since December 2020, when Singapore became the first country to authorise the commercialisation of cultivated meat. Understandably, Europeans want to know when it will be their turn: when will cultivated meat be served on EU plates? Cell-based meat on sale within 3-5 years? At ProVeg International’s 2021 New Food Conference, attendees were asked this exact question.

The world is dry and hungry but GM crops could change all that Biotech is eyeing wheat in Latin America and China as Bioceres warns about future food shortages 26 April 2021 - 13:28 Jonathan Gilbert and Scott Squires Picture: SUPPLIED Buenos Aires A world without enough food is just around the corner and can only be averted if humans forget their qualms about eating genetically modified (GM) crops, also known as biotech foods. That’s according to Federico Trucco, CEO of Bioceres Crop Solutions, a company that’s literally trying to put bread on the table with the sometimes controversial technology. Bioceres is trying to succeed where no other company has before by selling genetically modified wheat. While the vast majority of the world’s soybean and corn crops are already GM organisms (GMOs), these are fed to livestock. Biotech wheat, on the other hand, would be directly eaten by humans in bread and pasta, something consumers and regulators have ro
