Margaret Stender CRYSTAL FALLS Margaret Jean (née Fraser) Stender, 94, of Crystal Falls, passed away on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility. Margaret or “Maggie” as affectionately known was born on Nov. 3, 1926 in Detroit, to the late John Mathieson Fraser and Dorothy Christie Fraser. Maggie attended and graduated from Detroit High School. She then attended Albion College and earned her bachelor’s degree. She was a music major in choral music and an accomplished pianist. After meeting in college, Maggie married Alfred Adam “Al” Stender on June 27, 1948, in Detroit. They moved to Crystal Falls to accept a teaching position at the Crystal Falls School. Al and Maggie both became teachers there and raised two children. The couple celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in 2014, before Al’s passing on Dec. 2, 2014.

WILSON BYCZEK DETROIT (AP) The Michigan Court of Appeals affirmed the conviction of a man who was charged under an anti-terrorism law when he called the Iron County Sheriff’s Office in 2017 and said it was going to be “hashtag Las Vegas” if he didn’t get money for a workplace injury, just days after that city experienced the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. One member of the three-judge panel wrote a lengthy dissent, however, arguing that the charge against Wilson Byczek wasn’t what the Legislature intended when it passed an anti-terrorism law in response to the 9/11 attacks nearly 20 years ago.

May 8, 2021 SALT LAKE CITY, Utah Kevin Ray Hettich, 51, of Salt Lake City, Utah, was killed May 1, 2021. He was born Jan. 4, 1970, and graduated from Forest Park High School. Following graduation, he proudly served in the United States Army until his honorable discharge. Survivors include his mother, Gloria (Hettich) Frederickson; sister, Brenda (Hettich) Weck; two daughters, Grace and Paige Hettich; and one son, Caleb Fornelius. Kevin was preceded in death by his father, Mickey Hettich, and grandparents, Ray and Fleurette Rosander. Private family services will be held. Gloria Plank IRON MOUNTAIN Gloria Cena Cram Plank, 77, of Iron Mountain, formerly of Crystal Falls,passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2021, at Dickinson County Healthcare System in Iron Mountain. She was born August 27, 1943, in La Porte, Ind., daughter of the late Ellen (George) Dahl and Bert Cram. Gloria was baptized in 1953 by the Jehovah’s Witnesses. She attended Crystal Falls Schools and graduated from Iron Mountain High School, class of 1969. Gloria was employed as a school bus driver for the Niagara, Wis. school district and worked as a CNA at Americana for seven years and the Iron County Medical Care Facility for 19 years.
