A record 50,112 fresh infections on Wednesday pushed Karnataka’s Covid tally beyond 17 lakh, a grim milestone only Maharashtra and Kerala have crossed so far. The state’s previous daily record was 48,296 on April 30. The state reported its highest-ever daily fatalities of 346. Bengaluru reported 23,106 fresh cases, around 3,600 lower than its singleday record of 26,756 cases on April 30. The state has a total of 17.4 lakh cases, including 4.8 lakh active ones. The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday directed a State Legal Service Authority committee headed by a former judge, Justice AN Venugopala Gowda, to probe the deaths of 24 Covid-19 patients in Chamarajnagar and submit its report by Monday.
A division bench consisting of Justice AS Oka and Justice Aravind Kumar recorded its displeasure over the manner in which the government appointed a retired judge of its choice to head the commission of inquiry while the court was seized of the matter.

Karnataka government on Wednesday appointed a commission of inquiry, headed by Justice B.A. Patil, retired judge, High Court of Karnataka, to look into circumstances that led to the death of COVID-19 patients in Chamarajnagar district hospital on May 3, reportedly due to oxygen shortage.

Bengaluru: Karnataka High Court on Wednesday (May 5) directed the Centre to increase the quota of oxygen for the state to 1200 metric tonne for the next four days amid rising demand due to COVID-19 surge.
It has also asked the state government to submit a projected estimate of oxygen required for the next week.
The order comes amid reports of a shortage of oxygen in the hospitals. Earlier this week, 24 COVID-19 patients died in a hospital in Chamarajanagar district due to oxygen shortage.
