Now we have to wait and see what they decide.” That’s how David King Sr., chairman of the Woolwich select board, summed up a 90-minute meeting with Maine Department of Transportation officials Friday, April 9. At issue is $900,000 in proposed improvements to two intersections on Nequasset Road that may include a Route 1 traffic signal. Between the intersections are the municipal building, fire station, Nequasset Meeting House and a 19th century home housing the town’s historical society and farmhouse museum.

PHIL DI VECE News Contributor Tue, 04/06/2021 - 8:30am The Woolwich select board on Monday declined Bath Area Food Bank’s request to increase the town’s 2021-22 contributions from $1,000 to $1,500. In the request, food bank officials stated their client visits have doubled this past year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Woolwich residents have visited the food bank 175 times, they noted. David King Sr., select board chairman, recommended keeping all donations at the same amount as last year. All of those were approved by voters at the 2020 annual town meeting. “We adopted a policy of freezing charitable donations a number of years ago,” he said. He added, selectmen could change this if they so desired.

Two injured in Woolwich crash

Read Article Two people were taken to a hospital following a crash on Route 1 at the Nequasset Road intersection in Woolwich Monday, according to the Sagadahoc County Sheriffs Office. Lt. Brian Quinn said the crash occurred around 6:40 a.m. Allen Ponziani, 57, of Woolwich was driving on Nequasset Road and was crossing Route 1 when he allegedly drove into the path of a pickup driven by Paul Grover, 59, of Woolwich, Quinn said. Ponziani was taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick and was treated and released, according to a hospital spokesperson. Quinn said Grover’s passenger, Heidi Grover, 54, of Woolwich was also taken to Mid Coast Hospital, was treated and released.

Ordinance changes for Woolwich marijuana farm get hearing Feb 1

PHIL DI VECE News Contributor Thu, 01/28/2021 - 8:00am Before Sea Grass Group can finish its licensing to grow recreational marijuana, Woolwich voters need to amend the planning ordinance. A public hearing to discuss the changes will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1. Town Administrator Kim Dalton said due to COVID-19 restrictions, seating in the hearing room is limited to 25 people. Others can participate remotely via Zoom; the town website has details. A referendum to consider the ordinance changes is set for Wednesday, March 17. Polling at the town office will take place from 10 to 5. Absentee ballots will be available Feb. 16.

Woolwich board approves 30-acre solar project Construction may begin in June at hayfield off Route 1 Kathleen O’Brien / The Times Record WOOLWICH A 30-acre hay field in Woolwich will soon be filled with 19,000 solar panels as part of an estimated $10 million solar project. The Woolwich planning board approved the project Monday. Construction on the solar field, which will sit between Route 1 and Nequasset Road, is slated to begin in June and take six to nine months to complete. The solar farm is estimated to generate five megawatts of solar power, which could power about 760 homes, according to Allen Tate, project manager at Maryland-based EDF Renewables. The power generated will be distributed by Central Maine Power, but it can’t be purchased by local homeowners.
